Music is now consumed in interactive applications that allow for the user to directly influence the musical performance. These appli- cations are distributed as games for gaming consoles and applications for mobile devices that currently use proprietary file formats, but standard- ization orgranizations have been working to develop an interchangeable format. This paper surveys the applications and their requirements. It then reviews the current standards that address these requirements fo- cusing on the MPEG Interactive Music Application Format. The paper closes by looking at additional standards that address similar applica- tions and outlining the further requirements that need to be met.
